A Real Hero--Recycled Homes
I just happened to notice that May is almost over, and it's the month I never fail to blog in. Since I don't have anything new to say I thought I'd share this video which, to me, is truly inspirational. Enjoy and act!

9 out of 50 ain't bad
Here is FILM COMMENT'S END-OF-YEAR CRITICS' POLL BEST FILMS OF 2005
(Released theatrically in the U.S.)
1. A History of Violence (David Cronenberg, U.S.) 775 points Really want to see it.
2. 2046 (Wong Kar Wai, China/Hong Kong/France) 668 One of the best movies i've ever seen. Go out and rent this one immediately. Apparently it's kind of a sequel to "In the Mood for Love" which I haven't seen yet but intend to soon.
3. Kings and Queen (Arnaud Desplechin, France) 549
4. Caché/Hidden (Michael Haneke, France/Austria/Germany/Italy) 501
5. Grizzly Man (Werner Herzog, U.S./Canada) 490 Heard the story...silly hippies...
6. The Squid and the Whale (Noah Baumbach, U.S.) 474
7. Brokeback Mountain (Ang Lee, U.S.) 470 I'm as big an Ang Lee fan as you'll find, but I really don't know if I want to see this one or not. Don't actually know anyone who has personally, but the pool I'm drawing from there is shallow in numerous ways...
8. Tropical Malady (Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Thailand) 458
9. The World (Jia Zhangke, China) 401
10. Capote (Bennett Miller, U.S.) 384 Looks like Philip Seymore Hoffman is great in this, hope to catch it soon.
11. Good Night, And Good Luck. (George Clooney, U.S.) 330 I was foiled in my attempt to see this one back in the U.S. but still hope to eventually.
12. The Holy Girl (Lucrecia Martel, Argentina) 314
13. Saraband (Ingmar Bergman, Sweden) 289
14. Land of the Dead (George Romero, U.S.) 276 Zombie chic? I'll never know...
15. Head-On (Fatih Akin, Germany/Turkey) 259
16. Last Days (Gus Van Sant, U.S.) 256
17. Munich (Steven Spielberg, U.S.) 251 Won't see this one. Enough history has been Spielberged as it is...
18. The Intruder (Claire Denis, France) 223
19. Me and You and Everyone We Know (Miranda July, U.S.) 217
20. Syriana (Stephen Gaghan, U.S.) 208 Enjoyed this one when I was back home, although it was so depressing on so many levels. I watched it at about 1pm on a weekday with 5 other people in the theater, including an elderly couple with I assume their 8-10 year old grand-son. Poor kid, although the world might very well be a better place if more children got to see such things.
21. Match Point (Woody Allen, U.K./U.S.) 203 Above note on zombie movies applies to Woody Allen as well.
22. Café Lumière (Hou Hsiao-hsien, Japan/Taiwan) 196
23. Kung Fu Hustle (Stephen Chow, China/Hong Kong) 195 This movie is hilarious! Stephen Chow is comedy gold, also check out "Shao Lin Soccer" if you haven't already.
24. Paradise Now (Abu-Assad, Netherlands/Israel/Germany/France) 195
25. The New World (Terrence Malick, U.S.) 190
26. Mysterious Skin (Gregg Araki, U.S.) 185
27. Howl's Moving Castle (Hayao Miyazaki, Japan) 170 I haven't gotten into animation too much since I've lived in Asia, but I've heard good things about this one. Unfortunately I've only seen it available in Japanese and Korean over here, not even any English subtitles to be had.
28. Breakfast on Pluto (Neil Jordan, Ireland/U.K.) 164
29. Junebug (Phil Morrison, U.S.) 154
30. Keane (Lodge Kerrigan, U.S.) 146
31. The Beat That My Heart Skipped (Jacques Audiard, France) 139
32. The Constant Gardener (Fernando Meirelles, U.K./Germany) 138
33. Nobody Knows (Hirokazu Kore-eda, Japan) 135 Also missed this one at the last film festival but would like to see it eventually.
34. Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (Nick Park & Steve Box, U.K./U.S.) 129 35. Darwin's Nightmare (Hubert Sauper, France/Austria/Belgium) 129
36. Oldboy (Park Chan-wook, South Korea) 127 Definitely a very cool film, not for the faint of heart. The actress who plays the high-school girl in the all-important flashback scene near the end is my current girlfriend (every time I fall asleep) Yoon Jin-seo. Oh--this movie was actually filmed at least 4 years ago at this point so she's 23 now and by no means a superstar, which means my chances are not really that bad I think...More on her to come later.
37. Batman Begins (Christopher Nolan, U.S.) 127 I enjoyed this one and look forward to the sequels, especially if Gary Oldman continues his involvement. An apparently unknown in the U.S. Christian Bale film I've seen several times over here is "Equilibrium". It's pretty cool, kind of like 1984 done with Matrix effects. I'm a sucker for semi-intelligent sci-fi.
38. Turtles Can Fly (Bahman Ghobadi, Iraq/Iran) 127
39. Broken Flowers (Jim Jarmusch, U.S./France) 126 Still have yet to see this one but it's on the top of my list. Bill Murray is my favorite man alive and Jim Jarmusch is one of my top five directors. Couldn't get tickets to this when it came to the Busan film festival last fall, and when I tried DL-ing it I got a virus instead. Guess it serves me right, but how else am I going to see some of these movies over here???
40. Downfall (Oliver Hirschbiegel, Germany) 126
41. Sin City (Robert Rodriguez, U.S.) 123 One of the absolute worst movies I've ever seen in my life. Just a sickening waste of 2 hours that I think actually made me less human. Robert Rodriguez would be easily the most overrated director alive if it weren't for Quentin Tarantino.
42. Look at Me (Agnès Jaoui, France) 120
43. The Best of Youth (Marco Tullio Giordana, Italy) 116
44. Good Morning, Night (Marco Bellocchio, Italy) 115 I saw this two or three years ago at the Busan film festival and really hated it. Can't remember much more than that at this point.
45. My Summer of Love (Pawel Pawlikowski, U.K.) 114
46. Pride and Prejudice (Joe Wright, U.S./U.K.) 113 How many times has this been made?
47. War of the Worlds (Steven Spielberg, U.S.) 111 Must have been a down year for the industry if this cracks the top 50 list.
48. King Kong (Peter Jackson, U.S.) 110 I didn't see this one when I was back home because I was afraid of the running time, but had the time to kill back here so I saw it. WOW! I was literally on the edge of my seat for two of the three hours. Now, I'm one of the 8 people who didn't like "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, but Peter Jackson has definitely won my respect with this.
49. The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada (Tommy Lee Jones, U.S./France) 109 TLJ the actor makes me cringe like nails on a chalkboard, but this movie looks intriguing. Maybe TLJ the director is a different animal.
50. No Direction Home (Martin Scorsese, U.S.) 97 Bob Dylan: cool. Martin Scorsese: cool. Chances I'll ever see this: slim.

Well I'm not sure what it means that I had much more to say the further down the list I got. In my defense it is hard to keep up with this stuff over here, although the Pusan International Film Festival is truly a world class event that takes place this fall. There have been ten of them so far and I've attended five. Man I've been here a while. Oh and I'm not sure if it's counted as a 2004 or 2005 movie, but I really really (heart) "I (Heart) Huckabees". The Mark Wahlberg character is as close to a film representation of myself as I've ever seen, which makes the third time in a row thats been true after "Planet of the Apes" and "Boogie Nights".
